The 49ers (NFC West) were their usual mediocre (recent) selves last season and show no signs of changing that depressing record in 2009. But they do have some talented new additions, and it might prove hasty to write them off too soon.
The Rams (NFC West) were awful last season and there is no real reason to expect a dramatic turnaround in '09, other than the fact that these near-miracles do seem to occur in the NFL. St Louis needs a lot of good fortune to finish the year as winners. 
The Seahawks (NFC West) crashed down to earth last year with a lame duck coach and a (Seattle) Slew of injuries that left them without anyone to catch the football. This year promises to be better, but by how much?
The Cardinals (NFC West) were the shock story of 2008 as they scraped into the playoffs only to explode in the postseason, make it to the Super Bowl, and nearly deliver as underdogs (they got the cover, which is all bettors cared about). Can they deliver again in a weak West division?
