October 13 - There was one big winner who profited from the Unlawful Internet Gambling Act and that`s Harrahs who received a $15.1 billion dollar buyout offer a few days after the bill was passed. That`s the same Harrahs that gave Senator Bill Frist big campaign donations.
Bill Frist is the guy who is sickened and saddened by America`s gambling addiction - no wait, he`s only upset about their online gambling addiction. If they lose $30.5 billion in one year (2005 stats) at US-based casinos he doesn`t mind so much.
It helps that Harrahs was his 13th biggest campaign contributor, and also gave him an extra $50 grand just before he made that heroic last minute push to attach the bill to a piece of port security legislation.
The real issue here is not the rampant corruption, the blatant protectionism, and hypocrisy that would be evident to a toddler - the real issue is that Party Poker and 888 didn`t spend a dime of the billions they`ve hoarded away. If those guys were out "lobbying" senators, ie: paying for their hookers and blow and helping them renovate their homes in the country, then the online gambling industry wouldn`t be running around like a headless chicken right now.
You don`t have to be jaded to shrug your shoulders at American politicians; did you honestly expect anything less from them? I haven`t even mentioned the horse racing lobby, and how much money they gave to the good Senators, or the state lotteries for that matter.
The World Series Of Poker is going to be a lot smaller in 2007 but Harrahs doesn`t really care because they finally got what they`ve lobbied so hard to achieve, and besides which they`ve sold out for billions of dollars. By comparison Bill Frist sold out for a pittance.
If you`re an American and tired of being an apathetic patsy why not tell Bill Frist and other US Senators what you think of them and see how far your concept of democracy will take you.
