2006 WSOP - The Madness Of A Rebuy Event

24 July 2006

You wouldn`t catch me in today`s WSOP event - in fact you would have had to be insane to play in this one if you`re an amateur or not incredibly wealthy. It`s the No-Limit Hold`em Rebuy Event, and your best chance to see the level of disconnect between poker pros and real money.

Here`s an example: Play started a little after 12:00 PM. By 12:46 PM Daniel Negreanu was rebuying for the 13th time. Each rebuy "only" costs $1000. A lot of the pros brought along $25,000 in real-money chips from their petty cash deposits to have a good time today. They were happy to call all-ins with 23, scream out that they had "2 live cards" and gamble.

Negreanu eventually managed to build up a big stack and then gave it away and has already busted out of this one. Jordan Morgan knocked him out and a little later on busted Mike "The Mouth" Matusow as well.

Here were the numbers on the day, another typical WSOP monster field and purse:

Total Players: 754

Total Rebuys: 1,691

Total Prize Pool: $2,340,238

Number of Players Paid: 72

72nd will earn $4,095

1st prize for this one is a mere $631,863

I`m hoping that the pros take the main event a little more seriously, but I`m sure many players there will look to gamble aggressively early to build up their stacks, especially if they are up against terrified and timid amateurs.

There were instances where players called all-ins blind, and the funniest story of the day was when Vanessa Rousso paid Mark Seif $1000 to go all-in blind with his hand in an attempt to double her up.

It went down like this: A player under the gun raised allin for a few hundred chips. Rousso then re-raised and a player in middle position popped it up to 2000 chips (a third raise). Rousso then asked Seif to go all-in blind, which he did, in exchange for $1000 in cash from Rousso.

She wanted to squeeze out the middle position player, which duly happened. The all-in showed KK. Rousso turned over QQ. Seif now looked at his cards for the first time...AA! He busted both of them when an A came on the flop, and Rousso had to pay him an extra grand on top of it all.

Last sight of her she was leaving the Rio still laughing about it.
