Jamie Gold Wins It All, Rhett Butler Makes $3 Million

13 August 2006

My nemesis, Rhett Butler, ended up finishing 5th in the WSOP Main Event and bagged $3 million plus for his efforts. Like any good nemesis he isn`t even aware of my existence (probably) and I was one of many he must have outraced to go that far. Kudos to him, and also to the eventual winner Jamie Gold.

Gold will make an interesting World Champion for poker, as he is hardly an ambassadorial figure but he clearly played the pants off everyone else. His table talk spurred opponents to make critical errors, and it looks like we might well have a big ego to deal with.

On the one hand I say fair enough - the guy beat the biggest field in the history of poker and won $12 million. He is entitled to be arrogant. On the other hand the sight of him going to the bathroom during the WSOP flanked by three "bodyguards" to protect him while he takes a whizz is annoying. And, let`s get one thing clear - at that stage he hadn`t even won the tournament yet!

Perhaps Jamie Gold thought someone would kidnap him en route to the john and stop him from getting back to his enormous pile of chips? He was also less than gracious when he knocked out certain players during the event, but that could have been part of his table image (a giant prat with a giant stack), which goaded many individuals to their demise.

The result is a publicity coup for Bodog who sponsored Jamie Gold and will now milk him dry in terms of exposure for the online gambling site. Good for them! They need a boost following the cancellation of their conference, and Calvin Ayre sidestepping America - you see he`s far too busy with charitable causes to even consider going to the States.

You have to hand it to Calvin, he is the epitome of smooth. He could sell his BS as a milkshake and have a line around the block.

I think they`ll make a good team: the former Hollywood agent who "has a TV series in the pipeline" (ie: unemployed) and the unapologetic billionaire playboy, who is really a Canadian former medical supplies salesman who brilliantly reinvented himself.
