January 5 - When the US government passed the UIGEA legislation in October last year it was an absolute godsend for privately held online gambling companies like Bodog and Poker Stars, and they have thrived over the past three months.
The number of new players is simply through the roof for many of these firms, and their traffic has certainly spiked over the past few months.
It remains unknown whether the act will ever be enforced, or enforced meaningfully, and in the interim there is nothing to stop brave and forward-thinking online casinos, sportsbooks, and poker rooms from offering their products to USA residents. These are the same residents looking for a new poker room after Party Poker, Paradise Poker, Poker Room, and several other publicly-held big names abandoned them.
Enter the following players: Poker Stars, Bodog Poker, Full Tilt Poker, and Ultimate Bet to name a few of the new biggest names in the world of online poker, who have soaked up all those new US card players looking for a home.
The law such as it is remains inconsistent, tough to enforce, and deliberately vague. It has succeeded in scaring off a number of publicly-traded online gambling firms who felt they had no choice but to back down. But online casinos like Grand Monaco and online sportsbooks like Nine that were either privately held or sold to individuals can and do market to USA customers who still want the personal right to gamble.
