The online bookies are in the process of altering their ante-post betting for the 2008 March Madness Tournament, where the 65 best men`s college basketball teams do battle at the Big Dance to determine the NCAA basketball champion for 2008.
The reason for the alterations? #1 Memphis Tigers got beat for the first time all season, snapping a 26-game win streak in `08 and also ending a much longer 47-game home court win streak. The fact that they got beaten by the #2 ranked Tennessee Vols in an intra-state clash made it a seismic shift.
It was a great game, easily the highlight of a huge Saturday card that had chronic gamblers and those merry few who watch college hoops just for the hell of it delirious with choice. But it was still only one game, and in basketball that doesn`t mean much. It was a big rivalry game but it doesn`t change the fact that both teams will go to March Madness and Memphis will go further. That`s a ballsy prediction, and I`ll stand by those words come April.
It is a fact, however, that Tennessee will now go #1 in the nation, and deservedly so, despite the fact that they are March Madness bracket fodder historically speaking. One has to be a relativist in these matters and right now they are the best team in the country, but right now is not an important time to be #1.
Good for them as they continue to outperform analyst expectations. In fact we don`t even have them on our highly-prized (by us anyway) March Madness power rankings Top 10 list. That`s an oversight on our part, but only time will tell whether this Vols team is for real.
Memphis is still the team to beat in March, and a shoe-in for the Final Four along with North Carolina. The other two spots are still up for grabs, and I`m not changing my tune on this one.
