NCAA Tournament Betting Notes For Round 1

19 March 2008

March 19 - There were not a lot of betting upsets in last year`s opening round of March Madness, which turned into `March Sanity` as the seedings committee looked very smart and capable indeed unless you consider a #9 beating a #8 shocking.

This year could be slightly different and I thought I`d highlight a couple of tricky games for the lower-seeds and/or choose a couple of lively underdogs. These might not all be ATS upsets but could prove helpful to target in your local betting pool when the time comes to fill out that ubiquitous bracket.

Thursday games that could be interesting:

BAYLOR v Purdue The Bears have a very good team this year and although Purdue has looked good at times this is one small upset that the underdog could definitely pull off.

Texas A&M v BYU I do like the Big 12 as a conference this year (third in overall strength only to the ACC and Pac-10) and think their teams will fare well in general but Texas A&M won`t be one of them. BYU should have their measure even though the Aggies are currently favored in the spread here.

Friday`s games that could lead to upsets:

DAVIDSON v Gonzaga This is my top pick as a "bracket buster" in the first round. The #7 seed here is Gonzaga but they will need to step it up considerably in order to compete with Davidson, a smaller conference team that is superior on paper at least. Take the higher seed for this one in the old bracket.

OREGON v Mississippi State This one is a #9 against a #8 and it isn`t exactly a major upset but this one should still see Oregon win out. They play in a tougher conference and should be too strong in the first round for their opponents. It is also a good ATS play with Oregon +2.5 points.
