April 6 - Barney Frank has become the champion of regulating online gambling in the USA. This should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with his amazing career in American politics. Frank is one of only two members of Congress who is openly gay, although there are many others judging by the regularity of "scandals" which lead to compromising outings.
Barney Frank was involved in a notorious scandal of his own back in 1990. A male prostitute hired by Frank claimed that he ran an escort service from the congressman`s empty apartment when Frank was away. Frank had no idea this was going on, and although he was censured by the House Ethics Committee for his relationship with the escort they took no further action on the matter.
This, in spite of the attempts of other politicians who wanted to expel Frank from Congress. The most notable critic all those years ago was none other than the Republican Larry Craig, who led the mob. That`s the same Larry Craig who cruises men`s rooms in airports hoping to engage in anonymous gay sex in the stalls. His scandal is typical of the hypocritical double-standards and puritanism that plague American politics.
It has inspired Frank to come up with his own law that is now known as "Frank`s Rule". Barney Frank believes that it is permissable to out gay public figures who are in the closet and who attempt to demonize openly gay people. In Barney`s own words, "people who want to demonize other people shouldn`t then be able to go home and close the door and do it themselves".
One wonders how many of the signatories on that UIGEA bill enjoy playing poker or a trip to the casino? The same level of hypocrisy is certainly plain once again.
Frank knows that the refusal to regulate online gambling is doomed to fail in the same ignominious way that Prohibition failed. He is also no fan of government intervention in financial matters, rare for a Democrat, but one feels that Frank is closer to a libertarian worldview when it comes to the relationship between the government and the market.
At the end of the day regulating online gambling is one topic that Republicans and Democrats should agree upon. It would raise more money via taxation, which will cheer up the left-wingers who can then dole it out to shiftless meth addicts and feel better about themselves. It would also ensure that online gambling is monitored so that no money gets laundered by wiseguys or terrorists and that young people are not corrupted before their time, which will warm the hearts of right-wingers who can then focus on their right to bear arms against doctors who perform abortions.
At least there is one man in Washington who can cut through all this regressive thinking and offer a reasonable, intelligent solution. By the way, Barney Frank also wants more lenient policies regarding the use of marijuana - how great is this guy?
