Horse racing looked more crooked than a Kahnawake online poker website this weekend, and that takes some doing as the bar for the ultimate con, or should that be the absolute con has been set pretty high.

Was it more suspicious that New Approach came from the clouds to win the Epsom Derby, completely surprising his untrustworthy trainer Jim Bolger who apparently had no idea that his horse was even in the race, or that Big Brown seemed to miss his medicine and trailed in last in the Belmont Stakes? He left his trainer, Rick Dutrow Jr. looking like a fool, a charlatan, or worst of all, a failed peddler of anabolic meds.
Both races reeked of dodgy dealings, albeit in different directions, and for anyone who was only casually interested in horse racing it is a safe bet that they weren`t converted into acolytes as a result of the two biggest racing events on either side of the pond.
It should have been a memorable triumph for the sport with the Belmont Stakes supposed to usher in the first Triple Crown winner in the USA for the past 30 years, and the Epsom Derby looked wide open and a fair betting contest.
But the key to horse racing for those of you not paying attention is betting and the money on the table, and it has virtually nothing to do with the nobility of the animals as they strive to win and thus avoid being chopped up and served to Frenchmen. And with betting comes the temptations to screw people over and make a fast buck or several million fast bucks as the case may be.
Exhibit A is Jim Bolger who trains New Approach. With ante-post bets piling up into the range of tens of million of pounds he publicly declared weeks ago that his horse would not take part in the Epsom Derby. Many punters tore up their tickets, and betting on the horse was suspended by all the exchanges. But lo and behold, Bolger "forgot" that the horse was still entered, and then decided he might as well run the nag after all.
This is the same trainer who had the ante-post favorite for the 2000 Guineas last year and wasted punters` time and money then with ambiguous statements regarding the health of his charge. That time the horse in question never made it back to the track (Teofilo), after much dithering from Bolger. This time it was much worse as he stated clearly that New Approach would miss the Derby, because Bolger didn`t think the race was all that important.
After showing contempt for the traditions of English horse racing and bettors, who after all keep the sport alive, he promptly showed up for the race and won it after a plethora of bets were struck based on the assumption that his horse was a non-runner. Quite amusing, if millions of pounds were not on the line based on good faith. Why anyone would trust a trainer is beyond us though.
Don`t agree? Try out Exhibit B, "Tricky Dicky" Dutrow Jr. As we stated in previous posts it would take a lot of steroids or a super animal to win the Kentucky Derby in the manner accomplished by Big Brown. It now looks like it was the former and not the latter, as the meds wore off and the horse barely managed to stagger around the Belmont track, coming home last in a very weak field. The race was won by a 1-time winner who will never come close to another win of that magnitude.
Rick Dutrow Jr. has a well-documented history of doping everything in sight, from himself to all his horses. It would not be surprising to learn that nothing was wrong with Big Brown in the Belmont, which logically means that something was fishy with the horse that won at Kentucky and in the Preakness in a style that defied belief. He looked to have rocket fuel flowing through his veins in those two races, and ran so fast in the Derby that the horse who finished second died trying to keep up with him!
Maybe Big Brown will come back and win again, but here`s a prediction: he does it in a state where regulation of medication is less strenuously enforced than it is in New York. He`ll never win a race there that`s for sure, and Dutrow should eat some humble pie and learn to keep his enormous mouth shut.
If only there was some truth in horse racing it would be so much easier to support. Is the $50/$100 no-limit game up and running at Ultimate Bet? One has to have a better chance in that hole-cardless environment than at the races...
