July 13 - The 2007 World Series Of Poker sees an intimidating figure atop the leaderboard with 800 hopefuls set to face day 3: Gus Hansen, the Great Dane, the man ridiculed by some for his crazy style, and looked up (but not to, work it out) by all.
Hansen plays wild, he epitomizes the philosophy of win big, win early, or go home when it comes to tournament play. Whatever the Danish word is for copulation he doesn`t give one of those.
Gus Hansen either gets tossed with the flotsam and jestam - prettiest rhyme of the WSOP - or he goes on to cause havoc in a tournament, and often wins it all. He was my pick to win the 2006 Main Event, which naturally means he`ll win it a year later when I have no money on the outcome and no way of proving, short of a Google search (Danish word for copulation + unlikely), that I predicted it last year.
Gus Hansen won the Aussie Millions, which is a very high-quality event, and he`s won many times on the World Poker Tour. I`m too lazy to look it up but I`d put the Over/Under on 3.5 based on my failing TV memory.
Also in the field at this point are big dangers like Bill Edler (a bracelet winner this year and a very strong player), Scotty Nguyen (not as good as he thinks he is, but still better than 99% of players in this field), and Chris "Jesus" Ferguson. The Jesus is one of six Main Event winners still in the hunt along with The Matador, Carlos Mortensen, and of course Scotty.
A big shout out to Raymond Rhame from my `home town of South Africa` as the Americans would phrase it, as well as Carl Olson from my new home town of Seattle, who are both in the mix with 300,000 + chips (actual chip counts are available from a blogger who earns $10/h to wonder around the Rio counting stacks, but not from this guy.
I knocked Colson out of so many Poker Stars rebuy tournaments that I feel like I know the dude, although like some zombie he keeps rising back to life in those events because he has a bankroll the size of a small country`s GDP. I hope he does well.
Let me tell you this now - they`re all going to have to go some to stop Hansen, because he might be a maniac IN THE RIGHT SPOTS (pay attention Internet poker players in your foetid dorm rooms across the world), but he knows what he is doing and is one of the top 10 tournament poker players in the world. With the chip lead in this spot he is a big favorite to win it all.
