2006 WSOP Latest News - Record Payouts Announced - 08-03-06

August 2 - The 2006 World Series Of Poker is massive, how massive you may ask? Try a first prize of $12,000,000 (that's twelve million dollars) and $1,154,527 for the poker player that finishes 12th. The record field ensures that 873 players will finish in the money while nearly 8,000 will finish with nothing at all save for a souvenir "all-in" chip that did considerably more harm than good.

The WSOP is overwhelmingly large, but for those fortunate few who can navigate their way through a minefield of suckouts, bad beats, gutshot draws, and lines to the bathroom that seem to stretch all the way to hell, the rewards are equally immense:

1st place will earn $12,000,000, and it seems like ancient history when our jaws dropped at the realization that Chris Moneymaker had won $2,5 million at the 2003 World Series Of Poker.

2nd place pays out $6,102,499
3rd place is $4,123,310
4th place is $3,628,513
5th place is $3,216,182

Former WSOP champions have fared poorly in second-round action today. Greg Raymer was eliminated, joining Robert Varkonyi and Huck Seed on the rail. It still remains a great shock that Varkonyi made it past day 1, something he achieved only by making an awful play and then sucking out on the river against Marcel Luske.

Moneymaker surprised the poker world by lasting as long as he did, making it all the way to the dinner break on the first day before his luck ran out and he was eliminated.

Joe Hachem the winner of the 2005 WSOP and an extremely talented player who is certainly no flash in the pan continues to do well in this year's Main Event, and at the dinner break tonight he had over $80,000 in chips.

Another former champion who is still battling hard in this year's world championship is Chris "Jesus" Ferguson who caught a series of miraculous cards yesterday that had several wags wondering if he'd turn their glasses of water into quaffable Chardonnays once he was done at the poker table.
