2006 WSOP Update - $50K Buy-In H.O.R.S.E. Event Starts! 07-12-06

July 12 - If you're not a true poker fan this headline may have bewildered you. What's WSOP? (World Series Of Poker) Okay, what's H.O.R.S.E stand for then, and why is the buy-in an exorbitant $50,000? That makes it five times more expensive than the so-called "Main Event", the undisputed poker championship of the world...

Let's start with the answer to the question. In a H.O.R.S.E. poker tournament the kind of poker played in each round or level varies, and the five games are:

H : Hold'em (in the WSOP event this will include both Limit and No-Limit)

O: Omaha

R: Razz

S: Seven-card Stud high

E: Omaha Eight or better, or Omaha hi-lo and Seven-card Stud Eight or better as well.

The top poker players in the world all agree that H.O.R.S.E is the ultimate test of one's tournament poker ability because it is multi-disciplinary in nature. The winner of this WSOP bracelet is typically a top player, even when the buy-in was a measly $2,000.

In 2005 John "World" Hennigan, often referred to simply as Johnny World, won it all. In 2004 it was brash young gun Scott Fischman who added it to his first bracelet won earlier at the same World Series Of Poker. In 2003 the legendary "Texas Dolly" himself, Doyle Brunson won the event.

When play got underway earlier today these three players were all randomly seated at the same table - talk about a tough draw!

There are no easy table draws at the 2006 H.O.R.S.E. event, widely regarded as the second-most prestigious title at this year's tournament. With a buy-in of $50,000 every poker pro who wants to be considered the best in the world has shown up at the Rio today.

Daniel Negreanu guaranteed that at least 100 players would enter, which would ensure a prize pool of $5 million. We don't have the final count yet with play barely underway, but all the big names are battling away.

Will this event supercede the $10,000 No-Limit event as the new main event? It could happen if this $50,000 tournament is hailed as a success. We have a feeling that this final table will be littered with the best in the poker business...
