horse racing

March 24 - Come Saturday, over 50 000 race goers will flock to see seven races of varying purses, with a combined prize winning total of $21.25 million. Ultimately however, the 2009 Dubai World Cup, a Group 1 flat Race for four year olds and over, with $6 million as its trophy, will be the ultimate spectator draw card. Fifteen race horses representing six countries will be clamouring for the finish line over a distance of two kilometres (one mile, two furlongs), to take the title and riches of this year's Dubai World Cup.

The field should be well balanced and is led by Albertus Maximus, owned by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, whom, along with trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, led stable-mate, Invasor to World Cup victory in 1997. Local hero Asiatic Boy, thoroughbred to Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum and runner up in last year's event, is a promising contender should he live up to his convincing victory at the Al Maktoum third round challenge earlier this month.

Gloria de Campaeo of Brazil and Casino Drive of Japan are formidable opponents, as well as My Indy, Godolphin's first and second round winner of the Al Maktoum Challenge. Muhannak, trained by Ralph Beckett of Great Britain, will be looking to take on Saudi favourites, Joe Louis, trained by Jerry Barton, and Port Elizabeth's Horse of the Year, Paris Perfect, trained by South African trainer Neil Bruss. Muller, also trained by Bruss, a winner of eleven races in Peru, including the Triple Crown also represents the DWC.

The final fields have already been declared, but will only be officially released at the post position draw ceremony on Wednesday, 25 March. Come the 28th, the world will watch in anticipation as a new thoroughbred is crowned champion for the last time at flagship racecourse, Nad Al Sheba. May the best horse win...
