July 11 - As anticipation builds for the start of the 2009 National Football League (NFL) in September, so sports betting fans across the United States will begin to pick their favorite teams that they'll be hoping make it to the playoffs in January 2010. Here is our 2009 NFL Betting Guide and top picks:
Arizona Cardinals - Despite getting off to a shaky start at the beginning of the 2008 NFL season, the Arizona Cardinals silenced their critics very quickly when they fought their way to the coveted Super Bowl. And although they were undoubtedly the underdogs, they displayed their fair share of football prowess throughout, delivering in many high-pressure moments. However, it was not meant to be and the Cardinals returned to Arizona trophyless. This year, however, the team's confidence should be high and both their fans and critics should give them the respect they deserve. Be sure to watch this team.
Pittsburgh Steelers - There is no question about including the defending NFL Super Bowl champs in our list, given how superbly they played last year to get themselves through the regular season, through the playoffs and into the Super Bowl, which at times was somewhat touch-and-go. But they won it alright and we think deservedly so. Assuming they have retained their form and are just as hungry for the title this year as they were last year, the Steelers will no doubt be the team to beat. This team is definitely worth a wager.
Detroit Lions - While many readers may be frowning at this pick, there is a good reason they are listed here. As you may recall, the Lions failed to win a single game last season, delivering a performance throughout the NFL that could probably be described at best as cringeworthy. Lions' fans - assuming there are any left - will be eager to put last season behind them, but as the overwhelming underdogs this year, they could become a betting powerhouse. Betting fans would be wise to consider this team.
New England Patriots - Here is a team that already boasts many loyal fans and each season seems to generate even more. And it's not hard to see why considering their tight and consistent level of play. Last season the Patriots benefited greatly from the skills of their two talented quarterbacks, Tom Brady and Drew Bledsoe. As such, they should go into this NFL season a betting favorite. Be sure to catch the Patriots against the Buffalo Bills in their season opener for a glimpse at their form to come.
San Diego Chargers - Although this team has had its ups and downs, it is still well-supported by its loyal fan base and is one of those teams that will either 'make it or break it'. This year we feel like they'll make it, although they'll have their work cut out for them. In their season opener, they'll be throwing down the gauntlet to their close neighbors, the Oakland Raiders, but are expected to come out on top. We believe the Chargers could surprise everyone this season.
