August 16 - On Saturday (August, 14), football fans across Great Britain and in countries where first-tier English football is broadcast, were treated to the start of the 2010-11 English Premier League season, with some surprising results.
Arguably the most surprising - or perhaps not all that surprising - result was Chelsea's 6-0 drubbing of West Bromwich Albion (WBA), in a match where the defending English Premier League champions outright dominated The Baggies.
That said, there were many times in the first half when Chelsea failed to capitalise against WBA, that called into question Chelsea's lack of match fitness. Which if unaddressed, means The Blues may struggle against stronger teams early on.
For instance, during the match Chelsea forward Didier Drogba played two seemingly very different halves. In the first, he went largely unnoticed, not really getting involved, until a stunning goal in the 45th minute seemed to shake him awake.
In the second, the Golden Boot winner put two more past WBA's beleaguered goalkeeper, Scott Carson, to secure his first hat-trick of the season, and help his team to the joint top spot of the English Premier League standings with 3 points.
Blackpool also started off the new season with a bang, trouncing Wigan Athletic 4-0. What's more, The Tangerines win took the wind out of their many detractors, most of whom have all but written off the English Premier League newbies.
This season marks the first that Blackpool has played in the top flight since 1971. Over the last nine years, Blackpool has struggled up through the various football divisions to secure a spot in the Premier Division. They also earned 3 points.
Another notable result on Saturday, was Aston Villa's 3-0 victory over West Ham. Despite the sudden and shocking resignation of Villa manager Martin O'Neill last week, the team pulled together to defeat a disappointing West Ham Side.
Here are the complete English Premier League Football results from Saturday, August 14 and Sunday, August 15, 2010:
Liverpool 1-1 Arsenal
Tottenham 0-0 Manchester City
Aston Villa 3-0 West Ham Utd
Blackburn 1-0 Everton
Bolton 0-0 Fulham
Sunderland 2-2 Birmingham
Wigan Athletic 0-4 Blackpool
