May 25 - The proposed bill, H.R. 5767, has gathered more support. On May 15,
five more co-sponsors added their names to the list. They are Joe Baca (D-Calif.), Michael Capuano (D-Mass.), Russ Carnahan
(D-Mo.), Charles Gonzalez (D-Texas) and Ed Perlmutter (D-Colo.).
Further support came from Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) and Steven Rothman (D-New
Jersey) this past week.
There supporters also signed the proposed Internet Gambling
Regulation and Enforcement Act that will legalize and regulate online
gambling in the US.
Frank's bill would supersede the UIGEA which has forced the US to make trade
concessions after a dispute with the WTO.
The new bill will be aimed at protecting US citizens through proper
regulation.
UIGEA forces financial institutions to stop financial transactions related to
gambling but a House Subcommittee investigation questioned the feasibility of
doing this after stern criticism from the financial services industry, and
general consensus that implementation is not feasible.
Numerous other co sponsors signed up during April, including Gary Ackerman (D-N.Y.), Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.), William Lacy Clay (D-Mo.)
and Bob Filner (D-Calif.).
Another supporter, Rep. Robert Wexler, also has his own bill targeting online poker
regulation, the Skill Game
Protection Act, which would provide an exemption in the UIGEA and other online gambling laws for
the game of poker.
