The
AFC was created when the American Football League merged with the NFL in 1970.
Back then there were 13 teams in the conference. Since then there have been five
expansion teams (the most recent being the Houston Texans in 2002) and two teams
have left the conference, giving us the current total of sixteen franchises.
Some of the best known teams that play in the AFC are the New England Patriots,
the Oakland Raiders, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, who as of 2009 are the
defending Super Bowl champions.
NFL futures bets are extremely popular and before the start of the regular
season there is betting value in trying to predict the AFC Conference winner,
who then goes on to play in the Super Bowl against the team that wins the NFC
Championship. AFC Conference odds are offered by all the leading online
bookmakers and betting with our recommended sportsbooks is a safe and secure way
to wager on which team will emerge as the newest powerhouse in this
ultra-competitive conference.
The winner of the AFC Championship game is awarded the Lamar Hunt Trophy. The
Pittsburgh Steelers have won the most AFC titles, with seven victories.
Interestingly, they are also the team that has lost the most AFC Championship
games, and that total also stands at 7. The Cincinnati Bengals are currently
going through the longest drought of not appearing in the AFC Championship game
as their last appearance was 20 years ago. The Houston Texans are the only AFC
team never to go to the title game, but that is understandable as they have only
existed for 7 years.
