Last Season
The Arizona Cardinals grabbed the attention of football fans at the
end of last season, because although they finished 9-7, it was enough to
win their arguably weak NFC West division and send the team to the
playoffs. Once there, many fans expected the Cardinals to crash and
burn, but the exact opposite happened. Like pieces in a jigsaw puzzle,
everything fell into place for Arizona, and the team started to cook.
Quarterback, Kurt Warner, and wide receiver, Larry Fitzgerald, shined
the most. It all ended when the Cardinals narrowly missed out on winning
the Super Bowl.
Off Season
Despite their amazing post-season, the
Arizona Cardinals had plenty of issues to address in the off-season.
One was the fact that Kurt Warner's contract had expired and that wide
receiver, Anquan Boldin, was rumored to be leaving. The Cardinals,
however, re-signed both players and held onto key linebacker, Karlos Dansby.
In the 2009 NFL Draft, Arizona selected explosive running back Chris
'Beenie' Wells to replace Edgerrin James, and linebacker, Cody Brown,
who should become a solid player down the line. To try and enhance its
lacking secondary, Arizona selected safety, Rashad Johnson, and
cornerback, Gregory Toler.
2009 Preview
While most skeptics believe dumb luck got the
Arizona Cardinals as far as they did last season, it's worth
remembering that the team's offense spoke for itself. And while it may
be too much to expect Warner to post another 4,500 yard season, the
number of quality wide receivers on the team will keep the points
coming. Last season Anquan Boldin, Steve Breaston and Larry Fitzgerald
all overshot the 1,000 yard mark. But if there is one area of the
Cardinals' game that needs much work, its defense does. Despite some
bolstering through the 2009 Draft, there are still concerns that the
team's defense could undo any good work done by the offense.
2009 Prediction
The Arizona Cardinals may have not have a brilliant season ahead
of them if it wasn't for the fact that they're in the NFC West division,
arguably one of the weakest in the league. In fact, if the Cardinals can
play like they did in the post-season and make the necessary
improvements on their defense, there is little reason why they shouldn't
make it the playoffs again this year. Whether they can make it all the
way to the Super Bowl is another question.
**Our Pick The Cardinals should win the West, although the Seahawks figure to be much tougher. Once in the playoffs it is doubtful this team can make it back to the big show, and we have doubts about Warner's durability, in which case all bets should be off on this team.
