December 15 - It was an exciting week in the English Premier League,
with a surprisingly high number of draws. Six out of ten games resulted in draws
to be exact. But probably the most surprising result of all, was Liverpool's 0-2
loss to Arsenal despite playing in front of a capacity home crowd at
Anfield.
But Sunday's final result between the two top English Premier League football
teams was more about Arsenal than Liverpool. Consider that about a month ago
Arsenal were blitzed 3-0 by top-of-the-league Chelsea FC. In fact, after that
game Arsenal were probably at the lowest point in their season.
The loss put Arsenal 11 points adrift of the leaders and not knowing which way
was up. Which is why the past weeks have been so exciting, because whatever
Arsenal's famously frown-lined manager Arsene Wenger told the Gunners to get
their heads and hearts back in the premiership, has worked.
Arsenal have been steadily clawing their way back up the English Premier League
standings, and when most of the frontrunners failed to capitalize in their
Saturday games (including Man Utd who lost 0-1 to Aston Villa and Tottenham who
lost 0-1 to the Wolves), the Gunners wanted to play their A-game.
However, it was Liverpool who scored the first and only goal of the first half,
despite more than a few missed opportunities from both teams. But when the
Gunners returned to the field for the second half, they were a totally different
team, no doubt after a well-deserved bollocking from an angry Wenger.
Although they started the second half 0-1 down, by full time the visitors had
made it 2-1 in their favor in front of the by now much quieter Liverpool fans.
Said Arsenal captain, Cesc Fábregas, 'At half time the boss ... said we didn't
deserve to wear the Arsenal shirt if we played like that. He was right.'
And while Arsenal probably partied the night away after the game, most of
Chelsea FC were no doubt still nursing hangovers after drowning their sorrows
the night before when they only managed a 3-3 draw against Everton, a team way
down in the league standings, and one the Blues should have beaten.
