Arsenal Go Top of English Premier League - 12-06-10

December 6 - London football club Arsenal has gone to the top of the English Premier League standings by beating Fulham 2-1 on Saturday, aided by the fact Manchester United did not play on the weekend.

Manchester United - which faces Spanish club Valencia in its UEFA Champions League showdown Tuesday night at Old Trafford - was knocked off the top spot into second place thanks to Arsenal's win on Saturday.

But despite the final result, many fans criticized The Gunners' poor defense which came close to being responsible for the club - which hosted Fulham at Emirates Stadium - ending the match tied with their opponents

The club's defensive woes were only counteracted by the brilliance of French midfielder, Samir Nasri, who scored both of Arsenal's goals with the kind of style and grace that had fans yelling and cheering their lungs out.

From the start Arsenal took control and Nasri came close to opening the scoring in the thirteenth minute, but his shot went wide. However, he made amends a minute later when he finally found the back of Fulham's net.

Arsenal managed to dominate Fulham for the next fifteen minutes until Fulham forward Clint Dempsey slipped unchecked though the home team's poor defense to send one rocketing into the Gunners' goal, to tie 1-1.

A newly confident Fulham kept Arsenal at bay for the rest of the first half. And in the second half, both teams were on a more equal footing. However, Arsenal finally managed to break the deadlock, thanks again to Nasri.

Despite many valiant efforts from Fulham, Arsenal finished 2-1 ahead and the new English Premier League leaders. However, there is no doubt team manager Arsene Wenger will focus on fixing the team's defense this week.

Here are the complete English Premier League results from the weekend:

WBA 3-1 Newcastle
Sunderland 1-0 West Ham Utd
Arsenal 2-1 Fulham
Birmingham 1-1 Tottenham
Blackburn 3-0 Wolves
Chelsea 1-1 Everton
