Last Season
After ending their 2007 season with a poor 4-12 record, the Atlanta
Falcons returned with a bang last season to finish on 11-5. In a single
season, the Falcons' jumped from 23rd offensively to 6th in the NFL
overall. This dramatic change in the team's fortune had much to do with
super young quarterback, Matt Ryan, who threw 3,440 yards and 16
touchdowns. Running back, Michael Turner, also dazzled with almost 1700
yards this season. But if the Falcons had one weakness last season, it
was their defense, which allowed almost 350 yards per game.
Off Season
While the Atlanta Falcons are looking pretty sharp this season
offensively, thanks mostly to Matt Ryan and lineman, Tyson Clabo, and
offensive tackle, Harvey Dahl, it is the team's defense that needed the
most work. The Falcons' lost and gained some players during the
off-season. For instance, they lost Cornerback, Dominique Foxworth, to
the Baltimore Ravens, but signed tight end, Tony Gonzalez, from Kansas
City. Using the 2009 NFL Draft, the Falcons signed speedy defensive
tackle, Peria Jerry; defensive end, Laurence Sidbury; defensive back,
William Moore; and cornerbacks, Christopher Owens and William Middleton.
2009 Preview
With a host of new players to shore up the Atlanta Falcons' defense
this season, and assuming Matt Ryan will continue to cement his
superstar status, the team should be in good position to dazzle this
year they did last year. Another player expected to deliver this season
is tight end, Tony Gonzalez, who should be able to take some of the
pressure off top-rated wide receiver, Roddy White, who was often
targeted last season by defenses throughout the league. The only
question mark hanging over Atlanta this season is whether its new
defense - which may look great on paper - can actually deliver and match
the quality of the team's offense.
2009 Prediction
Traditionally the NFC South division has been tough to call and this
season will likely be no exception. That said, if the Atlanta Falcons
can maintain the quality and consistency of their offense this season,
and bring their defense up to par, there is no reason why they shouldn't
triumph over strong teams like the New Orleans Saints and Carolina
Panthers, and progress steadily up the rankings.
**Our Pick The defense should get better, the offense is packed with young stars who will get better and this team looks destined for a long run in the playoffs this year if they stay healthy. Sleeper selection to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, who would have thought that two years ago?
