Last Season
Last season the Baltimore Ravens were one of only a handful of teams
that seemed to improve with each game, going 11-5. Notably the Ravens
boasted the second best defense in the NFL, managing to hold their
rivals to an average of only 15.6 points per game. The team's energetic
young quarterback, Joe Flacco, evolved nicely as the season progressed,
becoming a force to be reckoned with. However, as well as Baltimore
played last season, they were ultimately defeated (on three occasions)
by their biggest rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Off Season
After impressing last season, the Ravens were obviously
eager to keep the momentum going during the
off-season, and focused on the NFL Draft. While they missed out on the
top selections, they did secure strong Mississippi lineman, Michael Oher,
who should be a big asset to the Raven's offensive front. The team also
secured nimble linebacker, Paul Kruger, who is expected to shine for the
team in the near future. Then there is cornerback Ladarius
Webb who, while thought by many to be 'undersized', has more than proved
that he can make plays when they count.
2009 Preview
Continuing from where they left off last season, the Baltimore Ravens
should continue to boast a strong and solid defense this season,
particularly with the talented Terrell Suggs throwing his weight around.
Although his contract expired in 07, he has been persuaded to stay on
with the team for a second year. A similar situation exists with Ray
Lewis, who has been at the core of the Raven's defense for many years,
and will likely see out his career in Baltimore. As for the Ravens'
offense, fans will be eager to see if Joe Flacco can 'bring it' again
this season. He'll be aided by Willis McGahee, who'll feature as the
team's main running back while LeRon McClain may take a crack at fullback.
If it all comes together, the Ravens' will be gunning for the Steelers
this season.
2009 Prediction
Judging by their performance last year and their cohesive style of
play, it would not be surprising to see the Ravens reach the final 2 of
the AFC this season. If their offense hold ups and their already
excellent defense is improved even further, this team could be
unstoppable. Baltimore will no doubt put more focus in players like
McClain to give them a greater edge, as well as in their passing game,
to capitalize on even more opportunities. But the team's keystone this
season will undoubtedly by Joe Flacco who, by all reports, is fired up
and ready to go. Our Pick The Ravens could go all the way this season. The defense is strong as usual, and the offense is a year older and wiser. Bet money on this team and you should end up in the Plus column.
