June 3 - Even though Saturday's $1-million Belmont Stakes (Gr 1) at Belmont Park in New York is lacking in its usual star power, it should still offer up some exciting horse racing action given its large 12-horse field of three-year-olds.
As the third and final leg of the U.S. Triple Crown of Races, the Belmont Stakes usually boasts the winner of leg 1, the Kentucky Derby, and/or the winner of leg 2, the Preakness Stakes. However, both winners are absent this year.
The decision by the respective connections of Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver and Preakness Stakes winner Lookin At Lucky not to enter their charges in the Belmont Stakes came as an enormous surprise and disappointment.
However, the show must go on, and go on it will. On Saturday 12 thoroughbreds will line up to contest Belmont's dirt course over 1 1/2 miles. Included in the lineup is 3/1 favourite Ice Box, who has proven to be a closer in past outings.
The big question is whether he'll be able to close in the Belmont Stakes, a race that closers traditionally not always excelled in. Then there is First Dude who'll start as the second favourite with top-rated jockey Ramon Dominguez aboard.
Third favourite Fly Down could also be a goer, a good-looking colt trained by Nick Ito who has proved himself over dirt in the past. However, without any truly standout horses, this year's Belmont Stakes could be won by any horse.
