May 16 - Big Brown could be the most impressive winner of the Kentucky Derby in recent memory, and yet US horse racing is now laboring under a pall following the shocking death of Eight Belles, the runner-up in the same race. The sport requires another Triple Crown horse to take away the images of Eight Belles and Barbaro; but it would be the first time since Affirmed did it in 1978 with Steve Cauthen aboard.

The latest betting at BetUS.com suggests that Big Brown could well be that horse, or will at least
head to the Belmont with the Triple Crown still very much a reality. He is odds-on to win. Several horses have of course won the first two legs over the past decade but all have subsequently failed over the testing mile and a half course at Belmont. But before he tries to go one better than War Emblem, Real Quiet, Smarty Jones, and others he will have to beat a field of twelve other runners on Saturday.
Big Brown has drawn a good post position at 7, and the only way he can lose this race is if something goes badly wrong. The problem with dirt horse racing in the USA, that does not take place on the far safer Polytracks, is that this is a real possibility. One only hopes that another Barbaro debacle is avoided on the Pimlico track.
