November 3 - The Breeders Cup world championship of horseracing will take place at Churchill Downs tomorrow, culminating in the Breeders Cup Classic. The overwhelming favorite for the race is Bernadini, dominant in the betting but still trying to come out of the long shadow cast by another famous 3-year-old, Barbaro.

This was the setting for one of the greatest performances in the modern era of horseracing: Barabro's amazing victory in the Kentucky Derby. Bernadini wasn't ready to race that day and when he came out to face the Derby winner for the first time in the Preakness disaster struck America's favorite racehorse.
Bernadini went on to win that race in a canter but no one seemed to notice, and indeed the general public still spends more time worrying about Barbaro's healing leg than it does about a string of mind-blowing performances from Bernadini.
Bernadini is the shortest-price morning line favorite ever for the Classic, a tribute to his recent form. He must face a top-class field including Lava Man, Invasor, and the wild card entry from Ireland, the mercurial George Washington.
If any horse has a chance to unseat Bernadini it will be Aidan O'Brien's "Gorgeous George", a horse that on his best day has looked like one of the true greats of the sport. It is shaping up to be a classic encounter, although the absence of Barbaro and what might have been a truly great three-way rivalry will still be felt.
