Brett Favre Confirms Return to Vikings this NFL Season - 08-19-10

August 19 - This week NFL fans across the United States were thrilled at the news that Brett Favre, one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL (and one of the oldest at 40), has finally committed to play this, his final season, with the Minnesota Vikings.

While some fans believe that Favre could not resist the $13-million paycheck he'll earn this season, others believe he returned for the love of the game. But whatever his motive, his presence will no doubt greatly improve the Vikings' prospects this season.

On Wednesday morning of this week, reporters gathered to watch Favre, who was sporting his familiar gray T-shirt and white and purple Minnesota Vikings cap, join his teammates for a practice session. That afternoon, he made a statement to the press.

On his decision to play for the Vikings this season, Favre said he was happy to play for the team and that he owed it to them 'to give it one more try.' However, he also reiterated that the 2010-11 NFL season would be his last as a professional football player.

'Twenty years and I'm done. This is the last year of my contract,' said Favre with his trademark grin. 'I'm sure a lot of people are like, 'Yes!' - including my family.' For the remainder of the press conference, the quarterback sang the praises of the Vikings.

Thanks in part to Favre, last season Minnesota finished top of the NFC North division on 12-4, and went through to the NFC Championship Game, only to be beaten by the New Orleans Saints, who went on to become the Super Bowl XLV champions.

Last season Favre threw for 4,202 yards with 33 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. With stats like those, it's no surprise he's been named MVP three times. News of Favre's return dropped the Vikings' odds to win Super Bowl XLVI from 11/1 to 10/1.
