Can Casino Drive Dash Big Brown Triple Crown Hopes - 05-31-08

May 31 - Horse racing fans all over the United States and indeed the world, are waiting in anticipation for next Saturday's Belmont Stakes (Grade 1) in Long Island, NY, to see if the great-hearted colt, Big Brown, can win the coveted Triple Crown. The question is whether Casino Drive will let him.

Owned by Hidetoshi Yamamoto and based in Japan, Casino Drive is considered to be Big Brown's biggest threat at Belmont, particularly after his spectacular 5 3/4-length North American racing debut victory in the recent $200,000 Peter Pan Stakes (G2).

On Wednesday this week, Casino Drive was scheduled for a five-furlong breeze training session alongside Spark Candle. However, after jockey, Yoshi Aoki, reported that he was 'excited' when walking with his stable mates, racing manager, Nobutaka Tada, ordered him to run alone.

Worried that Casino Drive would have run too fast in company, Tada consulted with the colt's trainer, Kazuo Fujisawa, who agreed for Aoki to take Casino for a slow run. And a surprisingly slow run it turned out to be too, with a time of 1:12.52. Too slow even to be credited as an official time.

After walking between stable mates, Champagne Squall and Spark Candle, down the backside, Casino Drive bid the pair farewell with a gallop from the 5 1/2-furlong pole until the five-furlongs marker in a time of 17.32 s. He made his next two quarters in 27.63 s and 27.57 s respectively.

But it was the last part where Casino Drive's speed shone through as he galloped from the finish line to the 1 1/4-mile pole in 25.41 s, with Aoki continuing to let him gallop around the clubhouse turn to the mile pole.

'While the time may have slower than you guys expected, Casino Drive continued to the backstretch, as we didn't try to stop him but let him run,' said Tada.

It will be very interesting to see how Casino Drive and Big Brown match up against each other in Belmont, given their vastly different styles of training.

The latest betting at Bodog makes Big Brown 2/7 to win the Triple Crown.
