June 1 - Despite speculation about whether highly respected England national football team coach Fabio Capello will choose to remain as the coach of the England squad until 2012, he confirmed this week that he is happy and is not going anywhere.
The Italian ex-professional footballer turned coach announced this week that he will formalise a new contract with England's Football Association (FA) before he and the squad head off to South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday.
It seems that the FA was forced to wrap up a new contract with Capello on account of the large amount of interest Massimo Moratti, the president of top-rated Italian professional football club Inter Milan (Internazionale), has shown in signing him up.
After winning the UEFA Champions League final last week against German club Bayern Munchen, Inter Milan secured the coveted treble, resulting in the resignation of coach Jose Mourinho, who will 'rescue' another team in the form of Real Madrid.
Moratti is hoping that the enormous hole left by Mourinho will be filled by Capello. However, in a string of press conferences, the England football coach has made it clear that the only thing he is concerned with is the England squad in the World Cup.
And on that score, with less than 24 hours before one of the competition's most highly touted teams wings its way to South Africa, Capello has finally decided on the 23 England players that will accompany him, although he is not ready to divulge who they are.
According to reports, the 30-man squad attached to Capello will be shaved down by seven men later today (Tuesday, June 1). Said Capello earlier this week, 'I know the 22 players who are in mind. They are the same 22 that I decided last week.'
Who the 23rd player will be will remain to be seen.
