October 5 - The worlds of gambling and those of hungry children in impoverished, rural areas in South Africa could not be further apart. Yet one unique website is going all out in its attempts to form a bridge between the two. The Do Unto Others charity website (http://www.do-unto-others.com) was created by gamblers on behalf of one ambitious church minister who dedicates his life to feeding school children in South Africa.
Brian Hutton, who serves as the minister for the Hillside Methodist Community Church, has one wish - to make a significant impact on the lives of the children whom he and his team feed every day with sandwiches delivered to neighboring schools. Hutton depends on donations to keep the project running, and he has big dreams to expand the area that he covers to incorporate as many children as possible.
The minister hopes that, with assistance of the gamblers who started the charity website, as well as others, the project will eventually grow to provide basic essentials such as food and clothing to Tembisa and the squatter camps surrounding the area. "Do Unto Others appeals to all citizens of the world to dig deeply - first into their heart and then into their pocket - to help this fund help the future leaders of our world - our children", says the site.
The website makes no qualms about the fact that it is appealing directly to gamblers who may have disposal cash, to help with the fund. The site begins off by justifying the form of entertainment known as gambling. "No, we are not second rate," says the site. "We simply love gambling and can afford to indulge in what we perceive is great entertainment. Yes, we can indeed afford it. This is OUR disposable income and it's our right to enjoy the fruit's of our labor as we see fit."
The site then goes on to appeal to gambles to share some of that income. "We are truly fortunate that we can indeed afford to gamble. We have some disposable income that is NOT required to keep our families and our lives afloat. Do Unto Others is simply a means for us to further share some of that disposable income with those less fortunate."
