August 30 - Ten matches were played in the English Premier League this weekend although none matched the hat-trick of 6-0 scores last week. Indeed, this weekend's worst defeat was West Ham United's 3-0 loss to Manchester United.
But one of the games that had everyone talking was the match between Chelsea and Stoke City where the Blues saw off the Potters 2-0, and increased their lead in the English Premier League standings to 9 points after just three games.
On Saturday, a confident and together Chelsea ran onto their home pitch to face an arguably out-matched Stoke City. But surprisingly, perhaps, the visitors held their own by managing to keep the Blues at bay, at least for the first 30 minutes.
For it was at that point in the game that Chelsea winger Florent Malouda slipped through the Potters' defenses to make it 1-0. As Chelsea fans have come to expect from the talented Frenchman, his goal was not just poetic. It was perfect.
Which is probably why Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti sung his praises after the match. To Stoke City's credit, they held Chelsea to only one more goal in the match. And losing 2-0 to a team like Chelsea is a far sight better then losing 6-0.
Another notable result was Arsenal's 2-1 win over Blackburn. Ahead of the match, skeptics were unsure of just how well Arsene Wenger's 'young' team would cope against the rough and tough Blackburn Rovers. As it turned out, just fine.
The scoring was opened after 20 minutes by 21-year-old Arsenal striker Theo Walcott, who put highly crafted and skillful shot into Blackburn's goal. However, Blackburn got their revenge 7 minutes later thanks to a fine effort by Mame Biram.
But not long into the second half Arsenal's Russian Andrey Arshavin scored the goal that gave the Gunners a 2-1 victory at the whistle. Arsenal's win elevated them to 7 points on the leader board, tied second with Man United behind Chelsea.
