April 26 - Just a few weeks ago, despite being in third place in the English Premier League standings behind Chelsea and Manchester United, Arsenal was still in contention, but poor results in the last few weeks have put paid to that as Arsenal is now seven points behind Manchester United and eight points behind leaders Chelsea.
Most English football fans have accepted that the Gunners are firmly out of contention for this year's Premiership title. And with just a handful of games to go in the season, they have also acknowledged that - like so many other European top-tier professional football leagues this year - the championship has become two-horse race.
With just a point separating Chelsea and Manchester United, anything could happen and judging their respective matches on the weekend, both are hungry for the title. In Chelsea's game against Stoke City for instance, the Blues kept the pressure on throughout, which helps explains the overwhelming 7-0 scoreline by the final whistle.
Eager to reclaim the top spot from Manchester United in the English Premier League, Chelsea ran onto their home pitch yesterday like Red Bull-fueled Energizer Bunnies, so much so that Stoke City never had a chance. In the first half alone, the Blues chalked up three goals, the first 24 minutes in thanks to Salomon Kalou header.
And despite an enormous pep talk at half time from manager Tony Pulis, the Potters fared no better in the last 45 minutes, letting in four more goals to make it 7-0 at the full time whistle. The huge win put a big smile on the usually scowling mug of Chelsea manager, Carlo Ancelotti. 'We score a lot of goals, we are happy,' he said.
Manchester United, meanwhile, didn't play to badly themselves, when they dispatched fourth-place team Tottenham Hot Spur 3-1 on Saturday. Despite showing much enthusiasm, mistakes in the second half caused Harry Redknapp's side to lose against the Red Devils in Manchester in a game punctuated with many opportunities.
With 20 minutes to go in the second half, Spurs' Ledley King made it 1-1 which is when the visitors should have stepped up their game. Instead, they carelessly gave away two penalties, which a determined Manchester United capitalized on. Needless to say, by the final whistle Manchester United had the match sewn up.
Arsenal, meanwhile, failed to put even one past Manchester City's goalkeeper on Saturday, and vice versa, making for 90 minutes of much too-ing and fro-ing, but zip zero scoring. Manchester City fans were far more thrilled at keeping the third place team in the English Premier League at bay than the other way around.
