January 3 - At the final whistle yesterday (Sunday, January 2) at Stamford Bridge in London, Chelsea FC manager Carlo Ancelotti must have issued a huge sigh of relief when his side drew 3-3 with Aston Villa, after being 2-1 down.
The Italian manager's future with the English Premier League club has been up in the air of late, given Chelsea's string of embarrassing defeats. However, Sunday's comeback performance may have given Ancelotti a temporary reprieve.
Chelsea kicked off the 2010/11 English Premier League with a bang, quickly forging a lead in the standings, but the sudden and unexpected firing of assistant manager Ray Wilkins in November seemed to spark the club's losing streak.
And since then the mighty Blues - and their beleaguered fans - have been lumbered with an enormous case of the blues, but despite their lackluster form, the club played better than expected when they hosted a spirited Aston Villa yesterday.
From the opening whistle both teams played hard and fast in a surprisingly thrilling display of football prowess. But it was Chelsea who broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute thanks to a sterling effort from midfielder Frank Lampard.
However, not to be outdone Aston Villa got their revenge 18 minutes later when winger Ashley Young sent one flying into the back of Chelsea's goal off a penalty. Tied at 1-1, the two teams left the pitch for their respective pep talks.
Obviously Aston Villa's was more effective because barely one minute into the second half, Aston Villa went 2-1 up thanks to a superb goal from top-rated striker Emile Heskey. Now the pressure was on the home side - and Ancelloti.
For the next 36 minutes neither side made much headway, until in the 83rd minute Chelsea striker Didier Drogba made it 2-2, followed six minutes later by another from center back John Terry to make it 3-2, to the roar of the crowd.
But just as Chelsea looked to win their first game in weeks, Aston Villa managed to pull another goal out of the bag in the 90th minute courtesy of center back Ciaran Clark to make it 3-3, a score that held until the full time whistle.
