October 4 - The weekend saw some big matchups in the English Premier League, including the showdown between current League leaders Chelsea, and fourth-ranked team Arsenal, which was won 2-0 by the Blues.
When Arsenal fans made the trek to Stamford Bridge on Saturday, they were full of hope the Gunners would beat top-rated Chelsea, and improve their English Premier League standings, but they would be disappointed.
They, along with Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, were clearly frustrated when the Gunners failed to capitalise on early chances against a slightly under par Chelsea. One example was Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny's early unchallenged header, which narrowly glided over the Chelsea crossbar.
And that close miss set the scene as many Arsenal efforts just fell short of the mark. But Chelsea also blew their fair share of chances at Arsenal's goal, until in the 39th minute forward Didier Drogba put the Blues 1-0 in the lead, a scoreline that remained unchanged going into half-time.
In the second half, play pretty much resembled that of the first half with both teams taking and losing possession. However, as the half progressed, it became apparent that Arsenal's attacking game was starting to run out of steam while Chelsea were creating more opportunities for themselves.
For instance, a sterling effort from former Arsenal striker Nicolas Anelka almost made it 2-0 for the Blues, but his shot at goal flew wide. It was only in the 85th minute when a 25 yard free kick blasted by Chelsea defender Alex found the back of Arsenal's net to make it 2-0.
Needless to say, that scoreline remained unchanged by the final whistle, and Arsenal fans trudged out of Stamford Bridge, after witnessing their club's second defeat of the season, together with three wins and two draws.
Chelsea, meanwhile, chalked up their sixth win of the season from seven matches, to put them even further at the top of the English Premier League standings with 18 points, 4 points clear of second place Manchester City.
In other English Premier League results, Manchester City beat Newcastle 2-1 while Manchester United could only draw 0-0 with Sunderland. Wigan Athletic beat Wolverhampton 2-0 and WBA tied 1-1 with Bolton.
