Last Season
The Chicago Bears went into the 2008 NFL season with high hopes that its
fortunes would finally turn around and that both its offense and defense
would fire on all cylinders. Unfortunately, this was not the case.
Offensively, the Bears averaged a lack-luster 296 yards per game.
Despite throwing 8 interceptions in the final 5 games, quarterback Ken
Orton had an OK season throwing 3000 yards with 8 touchdowns.
Defensively, Chicago was not much better, giving up 242 yards per game.
It did, however, finish the season on 9-7 just one game shy of making
the playoffs.
Off Season
In the off-season, Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith made some big
changes that will make the team's fans sit up and take notice this
season. The biggest was when the team snagged quarterback, Jay Cutler,
in the 2009 NFL Draft, arguably one of the most talented young players
in the NFL today. Cutler could do for the Bears, what Monday nights did
for football. The team also selected solid San Jose State defensive tackle, Jarron Gilbert;
Oklahoma wide receiver, Juaquin Iglesias; and Vanderbilt cornerback, D.J.
Moore to help make plays. The Bears also added talented St. Louis offensive
tackle and free agent, Orlando Pace, to the roster.
2009 Preview
So now with some fresh muscle and speed to bolster the Chicago Bears,
the team can concentrate on chasing that winning feeling again.
Chicago's offense should improve substantially with Cutler on board and
leading the way. Now the team just needs to find a suitable wide
receiver for the quarterback. But for right now running back,
Matt Forte, should also prove to be an asset on the ground. Defensively,
the Bears still have their work cut out for them. Hopefully D.J. Moore
will find his place on the team quickly, but expectations are not overly
high at this point that he'll have much to add from the secondary.
2009 Prediction
The Chicago Bears have to hit the field running this season if they
have any hope of improving on last season. In week 1 they'll play the
Green Bay Packers in Wisconsin, a game the Bears needs to win to boost
their confidence for week 2. That week they'll have to face defending
Super Bowl Champs, the Pittsburgh Steelers, at home. Assuming Cutler
takes to the Bears like a duck to water, this could be one of the most
exciting NFL teams to watch this season.
**Our Pick Very tough opening schedule could derail this team, but they also have made a serious upgrade at the key position, and should challenge for a berth in the playoffs. They could win the NFC North or make it as a wildcard.
