Last Season
The 2008 NFL season is one the Cleveland Browns are eager to forget
after they ended on 4-12. And to make matters worse, they started the
season as they finished it - losing. The lost their first 3 games and
their last 6, with a few redeeming games somewhere in the middle. The
Browns also had the unfortunate distinction of boasting the second worst
offense of the entire NFL, saved only by Cincinnati at rock bottom. And
although the team's defense was arguably far better, under the gun it
failed to bring home the points. Off Season
In the 2009 NBA Draft, the Browns snagged some players
that should help improve its performance on last season. These include
versatile and powerful center, Alex Mack, who may also do well as a
guard. The team also drafted two wide receivers. The first, Ohio State's
Brian Robiskie, will likely make it onto the field as a slot receiver
and, while not the savior the Browns need, may possibly start in a
couple of years. The second wide receiver is Mohamed Massaquoi who was
courted by the Georgia Bulldogs last season. A big guy, Mohamed has
earned himself a reputation for making plays when they count.
2009 Preview
This season Cleveland will be looking to pump up their defense, and
the player to help the achieve that will no doubt be running back Jamal
Lewis. Last year - his 10th season - Jamal eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark
and the Browns will be looking to capitalize on that. Although there are
rumors that WR Braylon Edwards may be traded, if he stays with the
Browns he'll be a big asset, especially to the passing game. After his
dazzling season last year, fans of linebacker D'Qwell Jackson will be
eager to see how he plays this season. In 2008 he was top of the NFL with 154
tackles and 2 sacks to his name, and this year will be at the core of Cleveland's
defense.
2009 Prediction
While the Browns are hoping to shake things up this season with
their new players, the million dollar question is whether it is enough
to raise the team to a consistent and competitive level. New players and
talented existing players aside, there are still many holes in the
Brown's offense and defense that need plugging. And while a strategy to
run the ball more this year may help the team in the short-term, long
term they need more time to iron out the problems. Our Pick Until this team gets a decent head coach they won't really go anywhere. Also, they play in a very tough division with two teams that are far better than they are. Look for 6 wins this season and they'll improve more in 2010.
