June 13 - The Cleveland Cavaliers +1.5 points was a consensus pick by every major sports handicapper to earn the cover in Game 3 of the NBA Finals, and a lot of the action yesterday was reportedly on the Cavs.
With five seconds to go and the Cavs down 72-73 it looked hopeful, but it was not to be as Ginobli drained both free throws, Bruce Bowen dirty as usual looked like he fouled LeBron James as he moved to shoot the game-tying 3, the shot missed (like most of Cleveland's perimiter shots all night long) and the Spurs held on 75-72.
You can't get the cover every night, obviously, and while the final score was close the Cavs once again dug themselves into a hole so that late in the fourth quarter they were down by 10. You can't hand the Spurs a 10-point lead and expect them to cough that up in the last 5 minutes.
The game finished way Under for total points, and was the second-lowest combined points total in the history of the NBA Finals. Both teams will say that it was because of great defense (publicly) but will truthfully feel that they couldn't make shots all night long and that top shooters from both teams were atrocious (privately).
There were open looks all night long, especially for the Cavs, who froze up and are now a single win away from the typical Eastern Conference effort over the last decade (with two exceptions) - namely playing the ignominious role of brief and very overmatched opponents for the Western champion.
