March 29 - Pakistan have often come to the rescue of cricket bookmakers, typically because they have been working for them and losing or bowling no-balls to order. But this time around no spot betting fix is needed. This time the bookies need Pakistan to do them a favor by actually winning a game. They need Pakistan to beat India in the second World Cup Cricket semi-final or they will lose a fortune.
India were pre-tournament favorites to win the 2011 World Cup, with Sri Lanka priced up second in the betting. Sri Lanka have already made it through to the final after brushing aside perennial bridesmaids New Zealand in today's first semi. If India play according to the form book and beat Pakistan the bookies will be cleaned out.
So for once Pakistan will be urged on to try their best, but besides their swashbuckling captain Shahid Afridi, do they have what it takes to beat the hosts? Afridi has been a revelation with the ball, his seemingly harmless tweaking has resulted in a rich haul of 21 wickets at a startling average of less than 11.
Afridi will win the top bowler betting market, but he might have to weigh in with a big score with the bat as well. India are a batting powerhouse, and Tendulkar, Singh, and company have been in sublime form.
But there is no doubting that Pakistan have talent, and on the day they could put it all together. Wednesday's semi-final will see both nations come to a standstill, and hopefully it will be a good advertisement for the game. Sri Lanka will be tough to beat for either team in what should be an excellent final either way. Our money is on Sri Lanka to win it all, and don't be surprised if they find themselves facing Pakistan at the end.
