Last
Season
The Denver Broncos were one of those NFL teams last season that had
success in their sights, but threw it away right before the post season.
With just three weeks to go, the Broncos had a 3-game advantage over the
San Diego Chargers, but buckled under the pressure. And the team's
ever-worsening defense did not help matters, as it allowed its rivals to
chalk up an average of 374 yards per game, while conceding 28 points per
game. That said, quarterback Jay Cutler dazzled throughout the season,
although he has left the team and been replaced by Kyle Orton.
Off Season
After Jay Cutler was traded to the Chicago Bears, the Denver Broncos
concentrated on finding a running back to take charge of the team's
ground game. The 2009 NFL Draft yielded small back, Knowshon Moreno, who
is renowned for his speed and making big plays. If Moreno works out, the
Bronco's could have a solid back for years to come. The draft also
yielded Robert Ayers of the University of Tennessee, who could add some
stamina to the team's defense, and cornerback, Alphonso Smith, who is
good enough to get on the field early this season. Free agent WR Jabar
Gaffney also signed, a player that has shone in the past.
2009 Preview
There are many fans of the Denver Broncos who were furious when Cutler
was traded, as he was probably the best player on the team last season.
Plus the Broncos' offense seemed to be firing on all cylinders. Now the
Broncos' offense will be in the hands of Kyle Orton, who was average at
best last season with Chicago. So the million dollar question is if
altitude can improve his game? Another question is whether Brandon
Marshall and Eddie Royal, who each played well last year, can do the
same without Cutler? As for the Broncos' defense, it will interesting to
see if the new talent can make a difference this season.
2009 Prediction
The only way the Denver Broncos stand a chance of having a solid season
is if they get off to a strong start early on by dominating in their
first three games against the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals and
Oakland Raiders. The reason is simple - after those games their schedule
reaches new heights on the difficulty scale as they take on the likes of
the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens and
Pittsburgh Steelers. As such, the Broncos' offense must be sharp from
the get-go if they expect to go the distance, which right now is looking
doubtful. Fans may be forgiven for thinking this season may not go the
Broncos' way.
**Our Pick Stay away from this team in '09. They could be tricky to handicap and very inconsistent. Our pick is they win 7 or 8 games, but they can only be bet on with any confidence when they are at home in Division rivalry games.
