2010 Season
At best, the Denver Broncos had an average 2009-10 NFL season
(8-8), which they followed up with a dismal season last year,
finishing last in the AFC West with a record of 4-12. As such, it
did not come as a shock when head coach Josh McDaniels was given
his marching orders. John Fox has been appointed as his
replacement, who will have his work cut out for him turning this
struggling NFL franchise around.
2011 Off Season
Coming into the off season coach Fox must have had a list as long
as his arm of issues with the Denver Broncos that needed to be
addressed. These included a defensive lineup with the
uncomfortable distinction of ranking last in the NFL in total
yards allowed per game, and an offensive lineup that was all too
often scuppered by inconsistency. As such, the Broncos' bid
farewell to RB Correll Buckhalter, WR Jabar Gaffney, OT Ryan
Harris, TE Daniel Graham, NT Ronald Fields, NT Jamal Williams, DT
Justin Bannan and S Renaldo Hill, and welcomed RB Willis McGahee,
WR David Anderson, TE Dante Rosario, TE Daniel Fells, DT Brodrick
Bunkley, DT Ty Warren, DE Jeremy Jarmon and DE Derrick Harvey.
They used the 2011 NFL Draft to sign up talented LB Von Miller
amongst others.
2011 Preview
Coach Fox not only has the unenviable task of getting the Denver
Broncos back on track, but also erasing a few year's worth of bad
habits. Offensively, despite rumors that Denver were seeking to
trade QB Kyle Orton to make way for up-and-coming QB Tim Tebow,
the team has confirmed that Orton will start this season, despite
proving that he cannot carry an offense. No doubt aware of this,
Fox tried to bolster the offense by signing RB Willis McGahee, but
failed to strike a deal, so newly acquired RB Willis McGahee and
existing RB Knowshon Moreno will have to do this season.
Defensively, the Broncos are in dire need of a top-draw DT to stop
the run, but failed to acquire one in the off season. Which means
the success of Denver's defense (once again) rests largely in the
hands of veteran LB D.J. Williams and newbie LB Von Miller.
Despite losing some form in recent years, veterans S Brian Dawkins
will start this season as will CB Champ Bailey, two players who
are still capable of 'bringing it' on occasion.
2011 Prediction
Even with a new head coach, and a host of new players, in all
likelihood the Denver Broncos will struggle yet again this season,
particularly if Orton fails to lead the offensive as he should,
and the team's defense fails (yet again) to stop the run. But one
thing is for sure, which is that the Broncos have little to lose
considering their record from last season and the fact they
finished fourth in the AFC West division. And perhaps this will
act to spur them into action.
**Our Pick
Even the most optimistic NFL betting fans will recognize that
coach Fox simply does not have enough to work with this season,
which is why the Denver Broncos will likely finish last again in
the AFC West division with an even worse record of perhaps 3-13.
The only way this might change is if Fox swops out Orton for
Tebow, and Tebow plays up to the promise that surrounded him when
he was drafted last year.
