Last Season
To say that the Detroit Lions had a poor season in 2008 is probably
the biggest understatement in the history of the NFL. This is a team
that broke record last season, but not the good kind. The Lions ended
the season on 0-16, the first time in the history of the NFL a team has
not won a single game. But it did not end there. The Lions were also
embarrassingly ranked overall in the bottom 3 of the league offensively
and defensively. The only player who shined for Detroit was wide
receiver Calvin Johnson, who made 78 catches for 1,338 yards and 12
scores.
Off Season
Wow, did the Detroit Lions have their work cut out for them in the
off-season. Thanks to the 2009 NFL Draft, the Lions wisely secured swift
Georgia quarterback, Matthew Stafford, who has a strong arm and knows
how to use it, and talented Oklahoma tight end, Brandon Pettigrew, who
should be an asset to its passing game. These two players should add
some sparkle to the Lions' lacking offense. Defensively, the draft
yielded Western Michigan safety, Louis Delmas, who is expected to shine
as a rush defender early on. Unfortunately, Detroit lost their 'play
making' cornerback, Leigh Bodden, to the New England Patriots this
season.
2009 Preview
This season the Detroit Lions will have to concentrate on many areas
of their game, but will likely focus more on their offense. As their
newly acquired offensive talent acclimatizes to Detroit's smoggy
skyline, the team should be far more energetic and proactive this
season, and possibly even win a few games. That is if the Lions' defense
plays better than it did last season. Who can forget how Detroit gave up a
massive 172
yards against the rush last season, by far the worst result in the
league. But while many people feel that its defense will let the Lions
down - yet again - this season, others foresee a change in the team's
fortunes.
2009 Prediction
For the Detroit Lions to have any hope of regaining some of the pride
they threw away last season, they'll have to make an impact early on in
the season. This means pulling it together to win a game or two, and
what better opportunity than against the Minnesota Vikings in week 2.
The Lions went down to the Vikings by just 6 points in two games last
season, so a dose of revenge is in order. They could also capitalize
against the St Louis Rams and the Seattle Seahawks down the line.
**Our Pick We'll go out on a limb here and say that the Lions improve from their '08 season. We confidently expect at least one email from an American that starts out "of course they'll improve you idiots..." But you will still be able to make fun of the Lions this year as they emulate their city and creep towards obscurity. 5 wins is being optimistic.
