July 1 - England's dream of winning the World Cup in 2006 ends like every English soccer dream since 1966, wet and a little embarrassing. The betting for the World Cup quarter-final suggested an England victory, but we at the Insider picked Portugal all the way at great odds.

England exited in their most beloved fashion, by choking in the penalty shootout. Their inability over the years to step up like men and slot home a penalty has proved their undoing time and time again. As was the case in the Euro2004 championships they were bundled out of a major competition by Portugal, and that came in a penalty shootout as well.
Portugal are now England's new nemesis. They're also the Dutch nemesis, and would be happy to become the same threat to either France or Brazil - they will meet one of those teams in the Semi-final.
England created few good chances, were reduced to 10 men when Wayne Rooney revealed his true thuggish colors and trampled on a Portugese player who was lying on the ground, but they saved the worst for the penalties. England missed three of four, and only Hargreaves managed to score one. It is no coincidence that Hargreaves is half-Canadian, half-Welsh, has never played soccer in England, and is viewed by many yobbo fans as "not a true Englishman" -Hargreaves showed heart, courage, and self-confidence, the very qualities that English soccer has glaringly lacked for the last 40 years.
