January 1 - Here's one for the books. The English government last year reformed
its online gambling legislation. For the most part, their new laws are seen to
be quite progressive. However, the 15% gambling tax is still a big burden
for some companies who choose to remain offshore. It is also quite ironic that
the government itself will have to pay the tax...

The heavy 15% tax is levied by the British government on companies that are
based in the United Kingdom.
The intention of the British Gambling Act of 2005 was to try and attract new
operators to the United Kingdom with favorable licensing and tax conditions. The
tax is still seen as a large burden by many and as a results the UK has not seen
the influx of too many new online gambling licensees.
This is a pity as the licensing conditions are favorable for players who will
benefit from the scrutiny under which operators are placed.
Some companies who are licensed in the UK, like Totesport Casino, are subject
to the tax, The casino is operated by the UK government's Tote, the online
version of bookmakers Tote.
The The Tote is operated by the British Department of Culture, Media, and
Sport, making them subject to their own tax!
To add to the irony, Totesport Casino is reported to be investigating a move
to the Channel Island of Alderney.
