Expert Predicts Delay in Frank Bill - 08-28-09

August 28 - A former senator of Nevada, Richard Bryan, told the Las Vegas Review Journal that he believed Barney Frank's bill to change the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act would not be debated this year.

Barney Frank's bill has been gaining momentum this year and many believed that if it reached Congress, it had a good chance of making significant changes in the industry.

However, Bryan believes that due to the facts that things move at a 'glacial pace' in Congress, more important issues will be first in line this year, meaning that Frank's bill may only be heard in 2010.

After the Obama administration took over office in 2009, Frank said that he would introduce this bill in March. It was eventually introduced in May 2009 after Frank asked for more time to tweak some information.

Although Frank believed that the bill would come up for discussion in July, more pressing matters such as the recession and national health have had these discussions delayed time and time again.

While Frank now hopes that it will be discussed in September, there has been no indication of that sort and officials are now worried that it may not be heard at all this year.

Bryan, who is a professional gambling attorney believes, however, that change will eventually take place.

"My sense is that there is a gathering, gradual momentum where, eventually, internet gaming will occur and be regulated. I'm just not sure if it has reached critical mass yet."

Interest groups continue to pressure the government to make changes to the online gambling laws in the United States.
