April 2 - The most bizarre poker tournament, sponsored by online poker room
Interpoker.com was won by a WSOP bracelet holder. The tournament was played in
arctic conditions with players having the option to re-buy chips for their
clothes...
Robert Varkonyi, a 2002 World Series of Poker bracelet winner, beat the field
and the extreme cold, reaching -10 degrees centigrade, and took the title of InterPoker.com Extreme Poker Challenge
champion. Staying alive in this tournaments was a challenge, let alone with it.
Players had the option
of re buying chips in exchange for clothes, and some ended up wearing just a t-shirt.
One Internet qualifier had to take of his thermal underclothing just to stay
alive in the tournament. Varkonyi was running laps between hands just to keep
his blood flowing.
"The tournament was nothing short of incredible. Players were playing
an an Arctic shelf in the Arctic in the most extreme of conditions" said InterPoker.com spokes person Peter
Marcus. "It was amazing to see ho people were able to concentrate, and hats off
to them for braving the elements in the name of poker"
Varkonyi came from behind to win and said it was an extra special win because
of the conditions.
