August 24 - That is indeed the question. While there is no doubt that the talented Minnesota Vikings quarterback has earned every bit of kudos that has been thrown his way throughout his long and illustrious affair, could this be a season too far?
At 40 year's old, Brett Favre is no longer a youngster, never mind the ideal age for a starting NFL quarterback at the highest level of American football, one of the toughest and most grueling sports on Earth. Which is why there are so few Brett Favre's.
While there will be many Favre fans who read these words, and yell out 'didn't you see how well he played last season?' Of course I did, and there is no doubt that the veteran quarterback earned every cent of his mammoth paycheck and then some.
But what I am saying is that every star burns out eventually, it's just the way it goes. And often it is those sportsmen and women that retire at the top of their game that we remember most fondly. Not those stars that slipped from greatness into obscurity.
Now I'm not suggesting that in the space of a single season Favre will 'slip into obscurity', but perhaps he could not bring himself to call it a day with the Vikings' hierarchy dangling a juicy single season paycheck worth $13 million in front of him.
At this point let me just say that I have nothing against Favre and actually think that he 'adds something' to every team he plays for, but I found myself frowning when he played just four plays in the Vikings' season opener against the San Francisco 49ers.
Yes, Favre made a completed pass and a sack out of those four plays, but I wanted to see more, or at least a new younger quarterback made of the same stuff of Favre. I don't want to see Favre wheeled out for five minutes each game this season.
I don;t want to be one of those Minnesota fans that says 'wow, did you get a look at Favre last night. Wasn't he great.' I want to be a Minnesota fan that says, 'How about that Favre, 40, soon to be retired, and still plays like he did in high school.'
