July 19 - It's no secret that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney received a lot of flack for failing to contribute to the England national football team, which was unceremoniously knocked out of the 2010 World Cup.
And amidst cries for Rooney to be replaced by younger players (look at how young the players were in the superb German national football team in South Africa) Man United coach Sir Alex Ferguson has come to his defense.
Fergie told the media recently that he does not expect Wayne Rooney to suffer from a 'World Cup hangover' any time soon, but did concede that the striker - like most of his England teammates - will feel some disappointment.
Before the 2010 World Cup kicked off in South Africa last month, Rooney was rated amongst the best five players in the world who were widely expected to be the top playmakers and goal scorers for their respective countries.
But alas for the Liverpudlian, his England teammates and tens of millions of English football fans, Rooney turned out to be a 'damp squib', where he only managed to play worse in every subsequent game to the team's detriment.
It has to be said, though, that even if Rooney had 'fired on all cylinders' in the World Cup, the fact that the England side as a whole was poor and failed to gel, meant that it probably wouldn't have progressed further than it did.
However, English football fans have short memories, and despite Rooney's superb season with Man U which earned him PFA's player of the year 2009-2010, many are calling for him to be dropped from future England squads.
