August 2 - While most news related to the English Premier League is about players movements ahead of the upcoming season, now the English Premier League itself, or more specifically its chairman, Sir Dave Richards, is in the spotlight.
English Premier League club Fulham are calling for Richards to resign as chairman because of his alleged involvement in a transfer deal last summer involving top-rated striker Peter Crouch's move from Portsmouth to Tottenham Hotspur.
Like a plot from a TV soap opera, Fulham officials are claiming that Tottenham Hotspur were 'out of the running' to sign Crouch, arguably one of England's most talented strikers, until Richards became personally involved in the matter.
Fulham claims it had almost finalised a deal worth £11-million with Portsmouth for Crouch, but was then caught completely by surprise with the news that the striker had instead signed up to play for Harry Redknapp's Spurs for £9-million.
As proof that Sir Dave Richards abused his authority to help facilitate a deal between the Portsmouth and Tottenham, Fulham are citing an interview with Redknapp four days before the deal was signed where the manager was quoted as saying, 'I like Crouchie a lot ,but I don't think it will be possible for us to do it. Sunderland and Fulham are also interested. I spoke to the chairman and he felt it looked too expensive.'
Fulham believe Sir Dave Richards called Peter Crouch in person to encourage him to move to Tottenham Hotspur, an action the club claims goes against Richards' role as League chairman, in which he is expected to take a neutral stance.
As such, Fulham has sent a petition to the Companies' Court claiming that they were unfairly prejudiced by Richards and the English Premier League. The club also wants to know who at Tottenham contacted Richards for his assistance.
