December 21 - Undoubtedly the biggest two shock results from last
week's English Premier League matches played in the UK were
Manchester United's 3-0 drubbing by leading London football club,
Fulham, and secondly Liverpool's lack-luster 2-0 defeat at the hands
of Portsmouth FC.
Manchester United's defeat takes the cake considering that the top
team is currently lying second in the English Premier League
standings (behind Chelsea FC in first place), while Fulham is
lying ninth. The short and tall of it is that Man U were simply
crushed by Fulham on the day. End of story.
Arguably one of the best players of the game was Fulham striker,
Bobby Zamora who seemed on a mission to prove he deserves a valuable
spot in the England squad heading off to the 2010 World Cup in South
Africa. But cynics will accuse Man U of playing badly versus Fulham
playing well.
The truth, however, is that Manchester played below par and at the
same time Zamora stepped up his game big time. Some sportswriters
even said that he played like a he was 'reborn'. And it was not hard
to see why as he ran rings around most Manchester players, including
top-rated Paul Scholes.
While many Man U fans were expecting Scholes to score his 100th goal
for his team, he had a day that he'll long to forget. Early on a
reckless tackle on Fulham winger Damien Duff earned him a yellow
card, and later he sloppily gave the ball away to Fulham's Danny
Murphy, who scored with it.
Needless to say things only got worse for the visitors who had to
slope off back to Manchester with a 0-3 mark against their names.
Man Utd's unceremonious defeat has been blamed on the fact that the
English Premier League team was forced to play without many of its
most key players.
Liverpool meanwhile only further demonstrated the fact that they are
a team in crises when they were beaten by Portsmouth FC, who are
literally at the bottom of the English Premier League. After the
game, all Liverpool coach Rafael Benítez managed to say was that the
referee 'was perfect'.
Sarcastic or otherwise, it showed a manager clearly in a distress
considering his team has only managed to win 4 out of 17 games this
season. In fact, during the game at Fratton Park in Portsmouth, many
Liverpool fans chanted 'you're getting sacked in the morning' at the
beleaguered manager.
