May 2 - In his autobiography, John Daly admits that he has gambled away $50 million at casinos since 1994. Thinking hard upon the matter, Big John comes to the following conclusion: He has a gambling problem and it could "flat-out ruin me" if he doesn't learn to control it. Our conclusion: John Daly should try online casinos where his odds would at least be better.
John Daly is well-known on the tour for being an addict. A chain-smoking, beer-guzzling frequenter of every rehab center between Pebble Beach and Augusta, John usually cuts a loveable figure swinging his mighty driver with a frosty can in his back pocket and a cigarette clenched between his teeth. It comes as no surprise that he has blown all his money and money he doesn't have by gambling.
But we admire John's optimistic attitude, and his feeling that things could get a lot worse. After all, if we lost $1.65 million at Las Vegas in two hours by playing $5,000 a spin slots (one of John's stories in his book) we would already feel that we were flat-out-ruined. It's time to get help when you make $750,000 in the afternoon by losing to Tiger Woods in a playoff and then you drive straight to Vegas to lose the entire amount plus another $900,000 on credit.
Daly is a very popular guy, especially with the type of people who yearn for those days when Dukes Of Hazard was on the TV, who feel that the ideal holiday consists of driving your home to a new state where you can crap in a new set of woods and drink beer with other people who also live on top of wheels, and who enjoy cleaning their gun collection while watching cars zoom around in circles on Fox. He should be snapped up as a spokesman for an online casino and sportsbook. A casino like Golden Palace could sponsor him to play on the tour and pay him in casino tokens, kind of like the circle of life.
If Daly was in a position to win a golf tournament someone should also tell him about BetFair, because he could easily lay himself (a concept with which he has to be familiar on at least one level) on a betting exchange and collect some more pocket change when he loses. It wouldn't even be cheating necessarily, since John's inability to play smart down the stretch is legendary.
John Daly is a cautionary tale for all of us who enjoy gambling online and playing slots for entertainment and the hope of a nice payday. Gamble within your means, and learn the importance of money management. Set aside an amount of money that you can afford to lose, if it comes to that, and know when to stop.
