March 27 - The European Commission has told the German authorities to
reconsider their plans to ban online gambling. Germany has been told
that it will face legal action from the European courts if it continues with
these plans...
This is the latest in a series of disagreements between Brussels and European
Union countries concerning the online gambling industry. Most European countries
have state-run monopolies but the European Union advocates free trade in all
EU countries. The German state governments want to ban all sports betting and
lottery gambling over the Internet.
The EU Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen has issued a warning to German
regional state governments last week. They have been given a month to amend
their plans.
'We asked Germany to reconsider the total ban on lottery and sports betting
on the Internet. We think a proposed total ban is disproportionate and there are
less restrictive measures, such as mandatory prior registration and strict
guarantees on identification,' an EU Commission official said.
The German ban was contested by Austria and Britain.
