Last Season
Going into last season hopes were high that the Green Bay Packers
would play a lot better than they did in the 2007 NFL season. But alas
it was not to be as the team faltered throughout the season, but
particularly at the end when the Packers lost 5 out of their last 6
games to end the season on 6-10. While talented young quarterback, Aaron
Rodgers - expected to replace Brett Favre - threw an average of
240 yards per game, the Packers' rush defense crumbled, giving up an
average of 28 points and 130 yards per game at the end, to finish near
the bottom of the NFL.
Off Season
The Green Bay Packers had a relatively quiet off-season. With Aaron
Rodgers - who posted an impressive 4000 yard season with 28 touchdowns -
and talented wide receiver, Greg Jennings, and running back, Ryan Grant,
keeping the team's offensive hopes alive, it was the Packers' defense
that needed a facelift. Enter the 2009 NFL Draft. The team selected
powerful, but quick 300 pound defensive nose tackle, B.J. Raji, to help
collapse offensive pockets, as well as tough, but largely inexperienced
linebacker, Clay Matthews. Between these two new defensive players, the
Packers' are banking on turning their week defensive game around.
2009 Preview
With the Green Bay Packers' young and talented offensive lineup raring
to go (top 10 in the NFL last season) and assuming its new draft
acquisitions will turn its ailing defense into a solid wall, the team
could be pretty unpredictable and even dangerous this season. The only
way the Packers' offense could improve on last season is if Rodgers
allows less interceptions. In terms of its defense, after last season
any improvement would be welcome, and with Raji now on board, he may be
the catalyst the rush defense needs to pull itself together this season.
Fans of the Packers' will be eager to see how the team's defense kicks
off this season.
2009 Prediction
Luckily perhaps for the Green Bay Packers, they have one of the
softest early seasons in the NFL. For instance in the first few weeks
they will play the Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Bengals and the Detroit
Lions. These early games will present an ideal opportunity for the
Packers' to get off to a solid winning start and build up some
much-needed momentum for their harder games later in the season. This is
one of the teams that may surprise everyone this season.
**Our Pick The Packers have a soft schedule and all the potential to turn around last year's ugly season. They should win at least 9 games and we're predicting that they make a return to the postseason. Watch out for this team.
