2010 Season
What is there to say about the mighty Green Bay Packers except
they made it all the way to Super Bowl XLV last season - seemingly
against all odds at times - where they proceeded to beat the
Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 for the championship and the opportunity
to hoist the Vince Lombardi trophy high. They completed the
2010-11 NFL season on 10-6 and second in the NFC North division.
2011 Off Season
Still riding high after winning Super Bowl XLV, the Green Bay
Packers went into the off season determined to plug any holes in
their game to ensure they start the 2011-12 NFL season in winning
form. As part of this strategy, head coach Mike McCarthy used the
2011 NFL Draft to scoop WR/KR Randall Cobb, who is expected to
shore up the Packers' already devastating offense, alongside RB
Ryan Grant and TE Jermichael Finley, who both return after being
injured last year. Surprisingly perhaps, Green Bay resigned WR
James Jones, and while the Packers many defensive players
farewell, there's more than enough left in the tank to make them
dangerous this season.
2011 Preview
If winning back-to-back Super Bowls was easy, every team would do
it. But it isn't, because football is fickle and a temporary lapse
in concentration, an injury or a general drop in form can change a
team's fortunes overnight. Consider how Green Bay were one of the
favorites to win Super Bowl XLV, but near the end of the season
came painfully close to missing the playoffs. However, they dug
deep and dispatched the Giants and Bears to secure their place.
The point is that the Green Bay Packers have demonstrated nothing
less than Grade A big match temperament, which assuming they hang
on to it, will take them a long way this season. Offensively, the
Packers are looking solid and will no doubt continue to make use
of their quick-strike passing game thanks to QB Aaron Rodgers and
arguably one of the best receiving outfits in the NFL.
Defensively, Green Bay should be able to hold their own if they
play cohesively.
2011 Prediction
While the Green Bay Packers may have had an eventful journey en
route to becoming the Super Bowl XLV champs, they more than
deserved the glory heaped upon them. Faced with some tough
opponents, the Packers learned to adapt, switching out weaker
aspects of their game for stronger aspects. It is this ability to
adapt and dig deep when it counts that makes great NFL teams, and
there is no reason why Green Bay cannot offer an encore this
season.
**Our Pick
NFL oddsmakers have laid the Green Bay Packers as the second
favorites to win Super Bowl XLVI (behind the New England Patriots)
and the favorites to win the NFC Conference. Looking at last
season and how coach McCarthy used the off season to tweak the
team, we see the Packers with a 12-4 record and as the new Super
Bowl champs.
